Review: Jessie Evans! A declaration of Love… @ TP2010

Heay seriously, how awesome is Jessie Evans? There has been a slow hype building around her amongst the Trailerpark crew since monday – everybody putting her at the top of their must-see list with that knowing nod and sly smile that usually means “this is going to melt your brain”. And right from the start, Jessie delivered. Her first wailing saxophone rip tore a memory-hole in my mind, bringing me back to living in stuffy squats, skanking into the early hours with bands like The English Beat and The Specials. Jessie´s punk-rock attitude transfers beautifully into her own blend of afro-beat slash two-tone slash latin slash no-wave slash gypsy-punk. Just looking at that combination of genres blows my mind and honestly, before the 1 hour love-fest that was Jessie´s performance yesterday, I didn’t think it could be pulled off. Luckily Jessie has talent in bucketloads and stage presence in heaps on top, kicking into cabaret style overdrive, legs and arms flailing in what can only be described as cha-cha on dirty dirty speed. And then right at the top, when you didn’t think it could get much better, Jessie busts out golden wings, sweeping graciously from her arms, turning her into a modern day Loie Fuller. And then she played Love Rules and everything became blurry and I think I declared my love to the big dude with the red beard and the leather vest standing next to me. And I think I remember him smiling benignly and gently stroking my cheek and telling me that everything was going to be all right but at that point I am not sure wether that actually happened or if it was just my feverish love-addled cowboy toast of a brain playing tricks on me. All in all, I think I love Jessie and if it doesn’t work out with the big guy with the beard, I want to take this opportunity to officially ask for us to be united in holy wedlock before whatever egyptian goddess spawned Jessie from her loins…

Finally I need to spend a few lines gushing about the amazing drum work of Jessie´s beat master Toby Dammit (of Iggy Pop, SWANS and The Screamers fame – hell yeah!). Dressed to the nines in a suit and white shirt, Dammit brought forth days of yore when jazz drummers propelled the world forward in syncopated beat. Toby was so tight, so fuckin-right-on that each whack of the high-hat, each boom of the kick sent ripples of pleasure down my back. Right-fucking-on!

Now go check out his and her myspaces!
